Know Your Skin Type

There are five major types of skin.

Understanding your skin type is the best approach to your personal skin care.

Normal skin We all wish we had this skin type.  This type of skin is well balanced; it is neither oily nor dry.  It is even textured and characterized by few blemishes.  Generally firm and smooth with small pores.

Care of Normal Skin

1. Keep the skin clean by washing twice daily

2. Moisturize with a light moisturizer at least once a day.

To maintain health balance use a gentle face scrub once or twice a week

Dry Skin This skin type looks red and patchy, feels tight and sometimes sore especially during the cold periods of winter.  It is typically fine textured with no visible pores, looking rather flaky with possibly blemishes.  This skin tends to become wrinkly with age.

How to look after dry skin:

1. Wash with a gentle cleanser twice daily, normally morning and before bed.

2. Use a moisturizer after washing, preferably one with SPF protection.

3. Using a gentle face scrub once a week will help in the production of oil and remove dead skin cells.

4. A good night cream is highly recommended since this will help the skin to heal while you sleep

5. Use a hydrating mask once a week.

6. Drink plenty of water

Oily Skin This type of skin has a greasy and shiny appearance especially around the forehead nose and chin.  It is prone to blackheads, pimples and blemishes.  Pores are typically medium to large and can become clogged with dirt.  The skin also has a dull and patchy appearance.  This type of skin is usually youthful looking due to the presence of oil on the skin.

How to look after oily skin:

1. Wash twice daily with a good quality face-wash.

2. Use a toner twice a day to help refresh and balance your skin.  There are several at home toners.

3. Moisturize at least once a day with an oil free moisturizer that will leave the skin matt.  A strange fact yes, but you do need to moisturize since if the skin becomes dehydrated this skin type will produce more oil to compensate for its lack of moisture.

4. Exfoliate once or twice a week.

Using a clay mask once a week is helpful since this will help in the absorption of excess oil and the removal of unwanted dirt.  Over time it may cause a reduction in the appearance of pore size.

Combination Skin This skin type shows signs of both oils skin and dry skin on your face.  It varies according to your skin type.  This skin seems to have two personalities.

How to look after combination skin:

1. The best practice is to use different products on the different areas of your face depending on the problem.

2. Avoid 'drying' products that will be too harsh on your skin, as well as products that are too 'greasy' and not suited for the oily areas.

3. Use a gentle cleanser on the dry areas and a refreshing toner on the oily areas.

Sensitive Skin People with sensitive skin are the most prone to allergies, rash, sting, and burns. This type of skin gets irritated easily and can go very red and blotchy. This type will have a lot more trouble to environmental factors and tends to be very sensitive to cosmetics.

Know your skin and take care of it.  It is your glory to being healthy and beautiful.

How to look after sensitive skin:

1. Use products which do not contain alcohol, harsh chemicals and are not perfumed.

2. Avoid soap as it can be quite a drying product. Rather opt for products developed for sensitive skin.

3. Use a gentle face wash twice daily.

4. Moisturize after washing.

Pay attention to the products you buy. Try to do a small patch test first before applying it all over your face.
